My Thoughts on This Recipe

I really loved this Cheeseburger Salad recipe from Skinnytaste. It is a perfect weeknight dinner, and it has to be better for you than eating a plain old cheeseburger. It’s definitely every bit as crave-able as that big, juicy cheeseburger.

Ingredients

The Cheeseburger Salad includes pretty much everything that’s in an actual cheeseburger, but without the bun and instead with increased greens. There are tomatoes, grilled onions, pickles, romaine and even avocado in this recipe! I particularly loved the grilled onions as they made a huge difference in the flavor, and the dressing is perfect as it is reminiscent of the sauce on a Big Mac. See the full recipe here.

Recommendations

Both my husband and I thought it needed more lettuce/Romaine to reinforce the salad idea, and I would prepare extra from now on.

I elected to put the cheese directly on the burger rather than grated in the salad, and I would do that again. I thought the avocado was nice, but if I didn’t have it on hand, I don’t think the salad would have suffered at all. I also used the pickle chips rather than the chopped spears, and this was just my personal preference. Either would be fine!

I actually used my air fryer to cook my burgers. That kitchen appliance continues to impress me. The ease of using it, cleaning it, and avoiding the fat all contribute to me using it several times a week. The burgers took about 14 minutes, and I flipped halfway through. If you have an air fryer, you might want to try it for the burgers if grilling is out of season.

I found the dressing to be too thick. I ended up thinning it out with some milk and water, and I think that’s necessary, otherwise it is difficult to distribute on the salad.

Next time I would also try a different mayonnaise, maybe Veganaise or a homemade version to keep it a little more natural.

Future Ideas/Variations

You could do several different versions of this Cheeseburger Salad. Perhaps you could try a mushroom/swiss, a Californian with avocado and bacon, a barbecue with French’s onions and barbecue sauce, or just a variation on toppings and cheese. Or you could do turkey burgers, chicken burgers, or vegetarian burgers. There are so many options!

Final Thoughts

I absolutely loved this salad, and it has been added into the dinner rotation. I have made it a few times, and I actually crave it sometimes now. I highly recommend you try it!
