My Thoughts on this Recipe
This Chocolate Banana Applesauce Cake recipe from Mom on Time Out tastes like a rich, decadent chocolate cake, but with fewer calories and no oil. It’s also perfect for using leftover bananas and applesauce. The nutritional breakdown for 1/9th of cake (it’s in a square pan) is Calories 245, Fat 5.3g, Carbohydrates 49g, Protein 2g, and Fiber 3.5g. There’s something about having fruit and no oil in the cake that makes me feel better about eating it. Also, I don’t know that you can really taste the banana (which is fine with me), so if you are not the biggest fan, you will probably still like this cake.
Ingredients
The main ingredients are banana, sugar, brown sugar, applesauce, water, vinegar, flour, cocoa and chocolate chips. View the full recipe here.
Recommendations
This recipe is very straight-forward and easy to make. The batter comes together in about 10 minutes. I elected to use my mixer for it, just to make it a little faster, and I would do that again.
Mine was done after 33 minutes, so definitely test it at the 33 minute mark, if not earlier.
Future Ideas/Variations
I don’t think I would change anything about this recipe, but it might be interesting to experiment with other flours like almond or coconut and see how that affects the flavor.
Final thoughts
This cake is moist and delicious. My husband has been eating it for breakfast, and I would eat it anytime, day or night! Give it a try!
