My Thoughts on this Recipe

I will start by saying that I am not the biggest fan of ice cream. I am more fond of gelato because it’s not as creamy and seems to have more flavor, and this Bananas Foster Gelato is no exception. It has all of the flavor of Bananas Foster with the rum, bananas and butter, but in Gelato form!

I’ve made this several times, and it is particularly delicious with a caramel sauce, as pictured. If you love Bananas Foster, this gelato will be right up your alley. Also, a 1/2 cup serving is 190 calories, 7g fat, 28g carbohydrates and 4g protein, so I do think it’s a little lighter than a typical ice cream.

Ingredients

The main ingredients are banana, brown sugar, egg yolks, cinnamon, whole milk, whipping cream, bananas, rum and vanilla. View the full recipe here.

Recommendations

If you don’t already have an ice cream maker, you will obviously need one for this recipe. This is the one I use. It’s only about $40, and I’ve had it for over ten years. I always keep the freezer bowl and paddle from the ice cream maker in my freezer, so that I can make it anytime without having to wait for all of that to freeze.

This recipe calls for rum extract or dark rum. Both work very well; you really can’t go wrong here. Do make sure to check the expiration date if you’ve had your rum extract for a while because it does go bad!

It is really important that the cream mixture is really cold before you put it in the ice cream maker. I was a little impatient this time and didn’t wait overnight as the recipe suggests, and I would definitely wait the extra time if possible.

I also found these cute ice cream storage containers, that I absolutely love for the freezer!

Future Ideas/Variations

I don’t think I would change anything about this recipe, but I do think you could use the gelato “base” mixture with other flavors if you would like to do so.

Final thoughts

This Bananas Foster Gelato is absolutely delicious and a great recipe to make when you need to use some bananas!

Those Sumo containers are good choice too because they are oval shaped and allow you to scoop all the goodness out of your container. I will have to try this for sure this summer. I love gelato!
